The story of Grady Ray seems like the stuff of Southern Folklore. His father was a pimp and a hustler and his mother a flower child. Born a biracial child in the shadows of the mountains in East Tennessee, Grady learned how to adapt to a world that was not completely accepting of him. Comedy became a useful tool in coping with everyday life.
He joined the military at 20 years old and served in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia before returning home to East Tennessee. Upon returning home he worked as a bouncer and in juvenile corrections before becoming a police officer for the City of Newport. It was during this time that Grady stepped on stage for the first time and realized his gift for storytelling and making folks laugh. Not long after he decided to depart the force and travel the country telling his story.
Grady Ray has performed all over the Midwest and Eastern United States. He also recently was invited to perform at the Cape Fear Comedy Festival. Along with stand-up comedy, Grady has had his comedy sketches featured on WMPC radio in Newport, Tennessee. Grady Ray is a lover, not a fighter, a comedian and a character straight out of a book you would find on the shelf of a moonshiner in the Smokies.
